A comprehensive IP policy formulation exercise would be initiated which would take into account newly developed methodologies on IP policy formulation, the progress registered in recent years, and any emerging IP challenges. Accordingly a roundtable would be organized in Islamabad to develop elements of an updated IP policy and strategy for the country. The objective shall be to develop a methodology for, as well as identify initial elements of, a medium/long term IP policy for Pakistan. Such a policy would ensure that the national IP authorities sustain, and build upon, the progress that is made during the course of the TRTA II Program.
To further strengthen the legislative framework activities will be undertaken to:
- Assist in the development and implementation of new IP laws – this will include advice on formulation and operationalization of laws on plant breeders rights and geographical indications, as well as a study on the use of the possibility of utility model protection in Pakistan (for small scale inventions).
- Facilitate accession to international IP agreements – this shall involve consultations with national stakeholders on possible accession to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and the Madrid Protocol.
