The TRTA II programme, supported an IP Awareness Seminar, hosted by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) Pakistan, in the HEC Auditorium on 23rd November, 2015. This was followed by 4 days of workshops in the areas of Patents, Licensing and Valuation.
The seminar was attended by 300 professionals from various institutions and sectors who also contributed towards discussions regarding Intellectual Property.
The welcome address was delivered by Engr. Aamir Hasan, DG, IPO Pakistan, in which he stressed on the importance of IP rights, and expressed that the seminar is a step in the right direction. This was followed by opening remarks from Chairman HEC, Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed. Dr. Ahmed, highlighting the efforts of the Higher Education Sector in adopting IP policies and assigning resources towards research in Intellectual Property.
Chairman IPO, Mr. Shahid Rashid thanked all the partners contributing towards IPR in his address and remarked that IPO aims to promote talent and add value to creative efforts in the country. He also stressed that entities need to realize how essential Intellectual Property protection is to a country’s economy.
The seminar was also attended by renowned musician Haroon Rashid, who is a member of the copyright board. He highlighted the various issues artists face in Pakistan, mainly due to lack of awareness in Intellectual Property, and thanked all the stakeholders towards their efforts towards building an IP system in the country.
The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Bernard Francois, Head of Cooperation for the EU delegation to Pakistan. He highlighted the past efforts made towards IP, and was pleased with the next steps being taken in this regard. He wished the implementing partners good luck towards strengthening the IP regime in Pakistan.
International experts, Mr. Haris Bajwa and Dr. Hassan Naqvi were invited from the U.S. to conduct the workshops. They also delivered speeches introducing the audience to these workshops on the opening seminar.
25 participants were chosen for the trainings included nominations from Bahria University, Air University, Fatima Jinnah University, CCP, COMSATS, NUT, Ministry of Science & Technology, amongst other key institutes and ministries in Islamabad. This workshop concluded with an examination on 26th November, 2015, entitling the graduates a certification in patent drafting, licensing and valuation procedures.
