The primary objective of the Generalized System of Preference (GSP) is to contribute to the reduction of poverty and the promotion of sustainable development and good governance. A Public-Private Dialogue on “Beyond the GSP+: maintaining the status and enhancing trade with the EU” was held on 7th October 2015 at Marriott Hotel Islamabad.

The chairpersons for this event were the Secretary Ministry of Commerce Mr. Muhammad Shehzad Arbab, the Additional Secretary MoC and DG PITAD Mr. Azher Ali Chaudhry, the Head of the Cooperation at the EU Delegation Mr. Bernard François, the Chief Technical Advisor TRTA II Programme Mr. Bruno Valanzuolo, the Economic advisor at the EU Delegation Ms. Roshan Ara and the TRTA II/ITC Programme Officer Mr. Mohammad Owais Khan.

The debate was based on a research study to assess the impact of GSP plus status on Pakistan’s exports to the EU. The study also proposes a way forward for sustainably developing trade relations with the EU and effective implementation of the 27 core conventions through the Treaty Implementation Cell.

Pakistan’s inclusion in the list of beneficiary countries of the EU GSP+ Scheme promises immense economic benefits hence it is incumbent on all the stakeholder, public and private sectors alike, to play their part in ensuring that we continue to benefit from such an opportunity.
