Post Graduate Diploma Course in Food Safety & Controls valued greatly by private sector in Karachi

On 28 January 2015, the first batch of graduates of the Post Graduate Diploma Course (PGDC) in Food Safety & Controls from the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Karachi, received their certificate. Of the 12 graduates to successfully complete this one-year Diploma course, developed through the assistance of the EU-funded TRTA II Programme, 10 are employed by the many local food business operators/manufacturers in Karachi, like English Biscuit Manufactures, Pizza Hut, bottle-cap manufactures, the poultry industry , bakeries and confectioneries etc.

Despite all the difficulties, that the University of Karachi has faced in conducting the PGDC in Food Safety & controls, it is very apparent at the private sector in Karachi has seen the value this endeavour. This was further emphasized by Dr. Abid Azhar, Dean, Faculty of Sciences and DG KIBGE (Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, during the graduation ceremony. Dr. Azhar stated that the Diploma course has further strengthened the qualification of graduates from the Department of Food Science & Technology and opened up avenues of employment and career enhancement.

Mr. Benoist Bazin, Head of Rural and Economic Development at the European Union Delegation in Pakistan, also appreciated the efforts of the University of Karachi and was encouraged to see that 30% of the graduates were girls. In addition he encouraged the graduates to not only promote food safety in their job place, but also link it with both animal and plant health- SPS regime – as food has both animal and plant origin. Mr. Bazin also emphasized the need for the Sindh government to follow in the footsteps of the other three provinces by passing legislation of the establishment of food authority to regulate and enforce food safety in Sindh not only for exports but also for the domestic market.

This PGDC in Food Safety and Controls has also received international recognition through its accreditation by The Royal Environment Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS). Mr Bazin during the ceremony also presented the accreditation certificate to Dr. Abid Husnain, Chairman of the Department go Food Science & Technology.
