Status of Food Industry in Pakistan

Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR), Labs. Complex, Lahore organized  one day national seminar on “Current Status of Food Industry in Pakistan Threats & Challenges” on September 6, 2012 in the main auditorium of PCSIR, Lahore. The theme of seminar was “safe food- healthy nation”.

Federal Minister for Science & Technology Hon. Mir Changez Khan Jamali, was chief guest at the seminar, which comprised of two technical sessions besides inaugural session, Dr. Shoukat Pervaz, Chairman, PCSIR presented in his welcome address, appreciated wide participation from both public and private sector. Dr. Shahzad Alam, Director General, PCSIR Lahore delivered the key note address, Dr. Ali Abbas Qazilbash, OiC, TRTA II Programme expressed his views about the seminar and at the end Dr. Nusrat Ejaz, Director P&D PCSIR, Lahore presented vote of thanks.

The seminar broadly covered a number of issues ranging from status of food industry in Pakistan to challenges & problems being faced by the local industry, and its subsequently impact on the community. This programme was particularly organized to create awareness to the public about the food quality and food contamination.

Dr. Ali Abbas Qazilbash, OiC, TRTA II programme, briefed the audience about strengthening food safety management system in Pakistan in the perspective of EU funded TRTA II programme interventions.Mr. Jean-Luc Siblot, Country Director, World Food Program, highlighted the status of food security in Pakistan in relation to industry. Mr. Asad Islam Mahni, Director General, Punjab Food Authority (PFA), Lahore, introduced his newly established department. Prof. Dr. Faqir Muhammad Anjum from University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) gave an overview of food industry in Pakistan. Prof. Dr. Shahida Hasnain from University of the Punjab, Lahore , in her presentation, she described genetic modifications and related crops improvements. Dr. Muhammad Nasir from UVAS, Lahore discussed food safety issues in Pakistan.

 Dr. Hafiz Wasi Muhammad Khan, from Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Board presented the status of dairy industry in Pakistan. Dr. Nusrat Ijaz, form PCSIR presented food colors, Dr. Shaista Jabeen Khan, Dr. Ijaz Ahmed, Mrs. Alim un Nisa, and Dr. Yasar Saleem all from PCSIR Lahore explained various issues related to food industry in Pakistan. Muhammad Shahbaz from SGS, Pakistan presented hypermarkets of Pakistan;  Prof. Dr.  Tahir Zahoor from University of Agriculture Faisalabad, expressed her views about dairy industry in Pakistan. These deliberations were affirmed that whether we are from R&D organization, industry, academia or regulatory authorities we are  all for upholding united for food safety and security.

During the concluding session a working group was constituted comprising of representatives from PCSIR, TRTA II, PFA, academia and industry to minimize the gap between industry, academia and R&D institutes and to monitor activities of food industry. This working group will also discuss emerging issues of food industry. At the occasion of seminar, different food processors & exporters exhibited their stalls to introduce their products.
